Posted May 18, 2010. The bad earth (if it is that) will be at the point common to the brake / tail lights to cause this problem, i.e at the bulb socket. If its not a bad earth the next likely suspect is one of the rear brake / tail bulbs itself, the filaments may have shorted. The LED taillights I have are Philips Vision. The lights are pointed back, which works well with the reflectors in the Escape's taillight housing. The lights are smart enough to distinguish between tail and brake lights so I don't have a problem with them not working at night. Install was easy, literally just plugged them in and they worked fine.

Swap the bulbs side-to-side, if the fault follows the bulb, well, sometimes even new bulbs are faulty. While the taillight assemblies are off look for broken or frayed wires or loose connectors; make sure the inside of the lamp socket is clean and the bottom contact is good/actually contacting the bottom of the bulb.
